Walking the margins

Project statement:

Talking about my feelings makes me uncomfortable, in fact it makes my skin crawl just thinking about it. With this project I allow myself to play like a kid with blocks in a therapist’s office. A quiet, deliberate process of acknowledging and expressing. An exercise in creating order in a chaotic life.

I take the time to pull from my surroundings, finding meaning in the mundane. Using materiality, form and function to create a conversation with the objects, myself and the parts of me I am not ready to put words to. This is how I give shape to things I can’t say. To the things I can’t explain.

I find refuge in the temporary nature of each structure, stacking until things feel steady enough to let go, but knowing it will eventually come apart. With that impermanence comes rare honesty. It’s a way of testing what can be carried and what can’t. What should be carried and what shouldn’t. I let myself find comfort when precarious things stay standing.

Though I hope these images don’t feel familiar, I know for many they will. Each of these assemblages speak to the emotions, symptoms and experiences that come from a life of chronic illness and the internal battles that coincide. They represent a life walking the margins.
