TARYN
SIMON
New York based photographer Taryn Simon is a highly recognized artist with exhibitions globally and a career spanning decades. Her work frequently draws light to things otherwise unseen, hidded behind the veils of politics, security and institutional power. Over the course of her carrer she has worked with institutions such as: The U.S. Department of Homeland Security, The International Commission on Missing Persons, and The Fine Arts Commission of the CIA. I am interested in how Taryn is able to manipulate the narratives surrounding the objects she captures purely by the way she approaches their capture. Her series ‘Contraband’ which includes over 1000 images of items seized from passengers traveling through John F Kennedy International Airport across 5 days is particularly relevant to this. In this series she could have lit and shot the photographs in a far more damning manner but chose a more sterile, continuous and log-like method. Through this choice she is able to drastically shape viewers perception.
By cataloguing objects in a scientific manner she reshapes the narratives, disconnecting owner, identity and object, reducing each subject captured into a mere artifact in a collection.
By photographing items of this nature and displaying them together in such a way, Taryn provokes discussion about what we really consider to be a threat or contraband.
Her work to me encourages my own body of work as it serves as a point of reference for how perception can be shaped by media and photography. It highlights the power of style in photography as well as the role and power of a photographer. Her work encourages me to delve further into my research on media and marketing and the influence it has, and how I can translate these concepts into my own work.
