Hutchinson’s practice often examines ‘the unspoken dimensions of personal identity within contemporary consumer culture (Hutchinson 2018) ’ through the use of atypical processes and work that challenges the biases of different mediums.

I am most inspired by the way in which she incorporates food into her product shots creating an effective interplay of textures and colour. This is something I would like to explore further in my own work. She allows vibrant pops of colour found on fruit and veg to contrast juxtaposing slick and modern black and white bags and shoes creating eye catching and visually interesting imagery.

I am also inspired by the way she combines unexpected objects together for visually striking pairings. This slightly more conceptual and unconventional approach is far more visually compelling to audiences then standard product photography; it has an edge and excitement to it which makes it more appealing.

Hutchinson’s lighting style is quite defined. Many of her still life works have a slick and almost industrial feel to them with contrasting highlights and shadows and defined forms. They feel really controlled. She supports the lighting on her subjects by providing a gradient in the background behind them which frames each composition intentionally, directing the viewers gaze with purpose.
